Week 3 Reflection
Week three already...wow! We've been having some really good discussions in class, and I love it. I think it's great that we are able to take on these extremely controversial topics and be so open-minded about them. The small group exercise we did in class on Wednesday really got me thinking, especially after hearing what all of the other groups had to say. To me, free speech is a trickier topic than pornography. I know exactly where I stand on the issue of pornography, but I seem to change my thoughts every so often about certain types of free speech. Here's what I took away from last week's readings and that exercise: I now know that I need to educate myself more on free speech, the First Amendment, and conduct vs speech. I ought to be paying more attention when these types of issues come up in the news. I don't consider myself ignorant, but I do need to pay a hell of a lot more attention.

I agree that free speech is tricky. I think it is even more important than pornography because it has a much bigger impact on our everyday lives. At least I would hope. I also want to spend more time paying attention to current events in the news because right now I don't know squat about politics.
I agree with you that free speech is tricky topic. Also, one of our cherished privileges is the right of free speech. By the way, there are a lot of things coming up in the news, but sometime they will give you wrong information. For that reason, I think that why we take the critical thinking class to help us to create own judgment.
Nice to meet you, too.
There is more freedom of speech in the United States than in my country. I really enjoy into this freedom, and I really love it. Also, I think all the Americans enjoy it, too. Sometimes I will think if this kind of freedom has given too wide for the people so that sometimes they just over use this right. And I also think that with less limits, more and more complex problems come out to our views. There is no good or bad for those coming out problems. They are a part of the developing process of a society, I think.
I agree! I have enjoyed our conversations. I had never thought about racist or hate speech as being protected by the first amendment. I realized that even though most of us would agree that hate speech is wrong, it is still not against the law. I also would like to feel more educated on free speech.
