Over the past week, I have been trying to come up with ideas for the social action project, and I haven't come up with much. I have seen two other people post their ideas in the blogs, and I'm really curious to see what others are thinking about doing.
I tossed around ideas like getting involved with the food bank, a literacy program for younger children, or the Humane Society, but that was about it. I wish I had been able to come up with more, and I feel like a discussion about the topic would really help us to generate ideas and start to form groups. Is anybody else with me on that?
I really want to do something meaningful, but at the same time, I have to be careful not to get in over my head since I'm carrying 17 units and working pretty much full-time. If anybody has any ideas, I would love it if you posted them so we could talk about it.

it seems that there a few people who would be interested in doing a project involving animals. i think it would be great to do something with the humane society or the literacy program or food bank. they all are great ideas. i wonder which one needs the most support? i think it would be best to help the one that is in need the most.
The more people you get helping with a project the bigger an impact you will have! Also, it will be much easier for you with all your units.
It also helps when you find one that makes a very direct impact as then you can get excited when you start seeing the results of your efforts. =)
I had been thinking about doing something involving bicycle advocacy or safety. I'm not sure exactly what it would be I feel somewhat strongly that a better understanding is need between cyclists and motorists. I was perhaps going to get involved with the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and maybe work with them at one of their outreach programs. If anyone is interested let me know.
Thanks, guys! So far, of the three ideas I posted, a literacy program holds the most interest and passion for me. It really makes me sad when I hear about parents not having time to read to their kids, and when I see kids having trouble reading. I just want to help them and read to them. My parents read to me a lot when I was little, and I know it makes a huge difference to be read to as a child. It kills me to know that some families don't even have books at all.
The company I work for tries to get involved and give back to the community, and some things I have done in the past are Relay For Life, Toys For Kids, and helped with food drives.
There are so many interesting social action project that we can do in the class. But I think it’s hard to choose which one can be so meaningful. Yes, we should start to think right now. I don’t know others, but I believe you have good point. Maybe we can to it that we have never done before.
Andrew, I love your idea! I never even thought about that. I used to live downtown and walk/bike everywhere. It's scary and unsafe out there. Great idea!
We are definitely on the same page. I have been struggling to find a topic for the social action project. I’ve been brainstorming and have come up with nothing. Like you, I would like to do something fun and engaging. At the same time, I have work and school. Every semester my life ends up being some crazy balance act.
I am sure you'll find a topic that you will enjoy doing and meaningful at the same time. The ideas that you have so far sounds good. I think the literacy for younger kids sounds likes a good topic. Like you said, i definitely agree that kids should be read to so it helps them for the future.
